Why is corn in so many feedstuffs?
Corn is cheap, has good digestibility in cooked form and provides quick energy. Major brands use it as the main source of calories. It is not inherently toxic, but when it appears as the first ingredient it indicates that animal protein is in the minority.
The real problem of corn in feed
The dog is a facultative carnivore. The problem with corn is not the corn itself, but its use as a substitute for meat protein. It also has a high glycemic index that can contribute to obesity.
Does corn cause allergies in dogs?
Corn may cause intolerance or allergy in predisposed dogs. Breeds with the highest sensitivity to cereals include: French Bulldog, West Highland Terrier and Cocker Spaniel.
When does corn not matter?
If your dog is healthy and its feed has animal protein as the FIRST ingredient, corn as the fifth or sixth ingredient is not a problem.
Alternatives to corn: what we are looking for in MordisquitosBio
